The very formulation of the notion (or accusation) of technological determination, you're indicating, is a trap. The only anti-environment to a technological world one can imagine is either feral bestiality or utopian Eden. If language is technology then humanity is defined by our extension by what we artifice, what we outer (to utter is to outer, etc.).

I love the comparison to Marxists and Neo-Darwinists because they seem to take on opposite poles, with Media Ecology in the middle. Going through my notes, I found my response to a line from Donna Haraway's Cyborg Manifesto:

"> I used the circumlocution of the social relations of science and technology to indicate that we are not dealing with a technological determinism, but with a historical system depending on structured relations among people.

...and that structured relation owes itself to the phonetic alphabet, which makes it a technological determinism!"

Yes, rhetoric is absolutely an assembly of techniques! Everything can be considered a technique. And that's one more reason why, even though he hardly used the word, McLuhan can be thrown in with everyone else criticizing or opining or theorizing or philosophizing on "technology". Of course, you read him and then he's actually talking about how unbalanced "sense ratios" and a lack of "tactility" or ability to play between figure/ground gestalts "somnambulizes" people into unconsciousness. And how all of our outerances/utterances, once they grow clichéd, can lead to sensory-closure and impercipience. He's trying to first-principles an art-based cognitive science incorporating metaphor and poetry as co-equal to logic and symbolic manipulation. He's trying to flush the Augean stables of all the caked-on, dried out conceptual horse shit that has Marxists and structuralists hallucinating their reified structures everywhere, closing everyone into their own little domains.

You're right. We need the bravery to respond to calls of technological determinists with "Technologically determined? I know you are, but what am I?"
